Do you have damaged shingles on your roof that you want to replace on your own? If so, you'll need to know how to get this job done without damaging your roof. Here are some tips that will help you replace the damaged shingle correctly.
Gather Your Tools
It will help to gather the tools you need before you get started. A flat pry bar is essential to get this job done as it allows you to get underneath the shingles and lift them upward. Pliers may be necessary as well to remove broken nails. You'll also need a hammer and roofing nails.
Know The Shingles To Remove
It's important to know that if you are removing one damaged shingle that you actually have to remove the two that overlap directly above it first. The strips of shingles may be longer than you anticipate, so make sure that you understand where the section of shingle material begins and ends. With those shingles removed, you can now take out the damaged shingle.
Remove The Shingles
Use your flat pry bar to lift the shingle up and get it unstuck from the surface below. Then stick the flat bar back enough to lift the nail out of the roof so that the shingle becomes loose. Be aware that the nail head may come right off when you do this. If so, you should remove the nail with your pliers.
Replace The Shingles
The new shingle should be the exact size of the one that you are replacing it with. Align the new shingle where the old one was located, and nail the shingle to the roof. A three-tab shingle has a nail pattern that requires four nails, all of which go directly below the seal strip. Two nails are placed at the far left and right of the shingle, while the other two are placed directly above where the three-tab shingle is divided. The heat from the sun should help the seal strip of the new shingle bond with the shingle below it.
You can now replace the old shingles above the one you just replaced, putting the nails in the same nail pattern placement. Since the seal strip on these shingles has been damaged, you can reseal it by using roofing cement.
